Critical infrastructure relies on two computing technologies - Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT). IT supports business and engineering tasks while OT supports embedded devices that handle specific tasks. Despite the importance of OT cybersecurity, it is often overlooked in favor of IT cybersecurity. Blurring the distinction between IT and OT technology introduces cybersecurity risks in safety-critical plant operations. While there are similarities between IT and OT cybersecurity, failure to consider their differences can lead to inadequate cybersecurity solutions that may turn OT into non-OT.
